Argentina

The National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI) of Argentina is organizing a World Metrology Day event entitled Measurements in daily life.

Australia

2013-05-20 - World Metrology Day is here!

Australia was one of the first countries to wake up to World Metrology Day due to its time zone and the event was celebrated with great pride. Bangladesh

There will be a number of events in Bangladesh to celebrate World Metrology Day 2013:

- a Press Release will be published in more than 36 daily newspapers in Bangladesh on 19 May,
- posters, banners and festoons will be displayed in many key places in the country to increase public awareness,
- a meeting will take place on 20 May in the conference room at the BSTI in which the Minister of the Ministry of Industries will be the Chief Guest. The State Minister and the Secretary of the Ministry of Industries will be Special Guests,
- a press release will be published to highlight discussions concerning World Metrology Day,
- a short story on World Metrology Day will be broadcast on Radio Bangladesh.


Brazil

The Brazilian National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro) will hold its fourth annual celebration of World Metrology Day on Tuesday, May 21, 2013.

On this one-day event, several presentations and other related activities will approach the WMD proposed theme Measurements in Daily Life.

Brunei Darussalam

On the July 8, 2013, the World Metrology Day 2013 was celebrated with the opening of the Temperature Calibration Laboratory, National Standards Centre, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, which was held at the main office of the National Standards Centre in Kampong Sinaut, Tutong District. A seminar, in conjunction to the World Metrology Day 2013 will be held in the Goldstone Ballroom, Centrepoint Hotel, Gadong on the 26th August 2013.

Pada 8hb. Julai, 2013, Hari Metrologi Sedunia 2013 disambut dengan Perasmian Pembukaan Makmal Kalibrasi Suhu, Pusat Standard Kebangsaan, Kementerian Perindustrian dan Sumber-Sumber Utama bertempat di Pejabat Pusat Standard Kebangsaan di Kampong Sinaut, Daerah Tutong. Satu seminar juga akan diadakan bagi sempena memperingati sambutan Hari Metrologi Sedunia tersebut pada 26hb. Ogos, 2013 bertempat di Goldstone Ballroom, Centre Point, Gadong.

Bulgaria

On May 20, the Bulgarian Institute of Metrology (BIM), together with the Union of the Metrologists in Bulgaria (UMB), is organizing a World Metrology Day event entitled Measurements in daily life.

To celebrate this year’s event, BIM and UMB are going to invite representatives of all interested parties – the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism, the State Agency for Metrological and Technical Surveillance, the Bulgarian Institute of Standardization, calibration and/or testing laboratories, the Bulgarian Academy of Science, the Technical University of Sofia, the Bulgarian Accreditation Service as well as former colleagues involved in metrology activities, producers of measuring instruments, etc.

Some activities of the official program are:

  • Open Doors Day – all guests are invited to visit the national standard laboratories and calibration and testing laboratories in BIM,
  • Official Opening of the newly facilities of BIM Training Center, built with the EU structural funds,
  • Official Cocktail that will be opened with presentations relating to the topic of the event, namely Measurements in daily life.

During the event, the “Best Bulgarian Metrology Expert” will be rewarded as every year.

China, P.R.

 

China produced and distributed 10 000 posters and coordinated a huge national publicity campaign to raise awareness of metrology across the country. Laboratory open days, on-site consultations and award ceremonies took place and the day was a huge success.

Colombia

The Colombian National Institute of Metrology (INM) will hold its second annual celebration of World Metrology Day on Monday, May 20, 2013.

During this one-day event several conferences will be given by our scientists and engineers, followed by a guided tour around our laboratories. The objective will be to allow visitors to approach the INM laboratory assistants and to discuss this year’s theme Measurements in Daily Life.

Denmark

The Danish celebration of World Metrology Day is being organized by the Confederation of Danish Industry, The Danish Accreditation and Metrology Fund (DANAK) and four members of the Advanced Technology Group: DELTA, FORCE, the Danish Technology Institute and the Danish National Metrology Institute (DFM).

The event will be held on 22 May 2013 in the new modern, energy effective Confederation of Danish Industry building in the heart of Copenhagen.


Hong Kong

The Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) and The Government Laboratory, the NMI and DI for Hong Kong will organise a seminar to celebrate World Metrology Day 2013 on 20 May 2013. For the event program please click here.


Iran, Islamic Republic of

The Institute of Standards and Industrial Research of Iran (ISIRI) celebrated its 5th world Metrology Day on 3rd of July 2013, in the Olympic Hotel, Tehran.

This event was held with participation of more than 500 experts of metrology, ISIRI provincial General Directors, their consultants and deputies, University professors and managers of different governmental organizations and ministries such as the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC), producers of metrological equipments and also the ISIRI president and vice president of I.R. of Iran’s parliament.

At the beginning of the ceremony, the Director of the Center of Metrology, Weights and Measurements of ISIRI, highlighted the ISIRI’s president order for the restructuring of the Metrology Center, on which considering the structure of some developing and developed countries, the new structure has three departments: scientific, legal and industrial.

The Scientific department will focus on training, research and standardization. The metrological department will focus on health, the environment, packaging and business. For industrial metrology, the formation of four department of chemistry, optics, mechanics and acoustics and also medical quantities that includes 31 reference laboratories will be noted. At the end of his speech, he requested more active participation of experts in OIML mirror committees, in order to ensure active participation to all OIML Committees and in future establishe some of the OIML secretariats in Iran.

The vice president of the Iranian Parliament, Eng. Bahonar, focused on the position and the role of metrology for defining financial and material values of the statistical indicators to develop and form the fifth development plan and its budgeting at national level.

The Vice president of Medical devices management of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education was the next speaker of the event, who asked the Metrology Center assistance in testing the medical devices and results.

Dr. Beytollahi, the secretary of INIC, featured the subjects of metrology and nanotechnology and requested to form the new nanolabs in relation with nanometrology in Metrology Center of Iran.

At the end of ceremony, ISIRI’s president, Mr. Nezameddin Barzegari, highlighted the role of metrology in sustainable development of Iran, urged for strengthening National Metrology Center in restructure of the fields of human resources, state of the art devices and equipment and necessary space according to requirements of each calibration and resource laboratories.

For the first time, two new Persian books on metrology entitled “Introduction to OIML” and “International Scientific and Practical Metrology” were introduced and exposed during this ceremony by ISIRI president.

In recognition of Dr. Mahmood Hessabi, the Father of the Modern Physics in Iran and Founder of ISIRI, who made a significant contribution and efforts to develop the Metrological rules and SI systems in Iran, his trophy, was presented to his son. Also it was decided to present Dr. Hessabi’s trophy to appreciate and encourage the best selected metrology affords and activities in Iran. 

Furthermore, the WMD message was translated into Persian and read during the ceremony; it was included in the ISIRI bulletin and website in addition to being distributed all over the country.

Korea (Rep.)

KRISS is celebrating World Metrology Day 2013 in a unique way by organizing “KRISS Metrology Week” with a series of events relating to R&D in metrology and its customer services. Mexico

In commemoration of World Metrology Day the Mexican National Metrology Centre is organizing an Open Day (DPA) during which it will offer guided tours of the facilities CENAM, briefly showing the scientific and technological developments offered by each laboratory measurement.

On this occasion CENAM will offer laboratory tours, measuring basic metrology conferences, corporate video projection, Newton tree, display measurement standards and access to the Library.

The 2400 NCSLI Mexico Region Coordinator and ETALONS Co. will hold a Regional Meeting on May 20 to celebrate WMD. ETALONS is a commercial private Calibration Laboratory that been providing services in Mexico since 1981.

Namibia

 

Namibia joined the international community in commemorating World Metrology Day with a week-long series of media promotional events from 13 to 20 May 2013.

The commemoration coincided with the official presentation of the Accreditation Certificate to the NSI Mass Metrology Calibration Laboratory, by the multi-economy accreditation body servicing some economies in SADC (including Namibia), the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Services (SADCAS) during a gala event on the evening of the 16th of May 2013. The NSI Metrology Laboratory is the first laboratory to be accredited for calibration services in Namibia.

Pakistan

 

The National Physical & Standards Laboratory (NPSL), Pakistan, will be celebrating World Metrology Day on 20 May in the Marriott Hotel, Islamabad. The objective will be to raise the general level of awareness about metrology and metrological interventions in daily life and to acknowledge the services provided by metrologists.

The event will be a half day activity, opening with speeches from the Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science & Technology, Director General, Pakistan National Accreditation Council, Representative stakeholders and Shaheen Raja, NPSL Director General. Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia will commemorate the day on Tuesday May 21. The SLBS (Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards) will present an initiative for discussion with the medical sector on a verification service for non-invasive mechanical and electronic blood pressure meters.

The SLBS is hoping to meet stakeholders in the public and private sector to discuss the initiative and to agree on the way forward in this area of medicine. A half-day consultation of stakeholders is planned for Tuesday 21st May 2013 at the SLBS Conference Room in Bisee.

Saudi Arabia

This year's event was the fourth edition since 2010. On 20 May 2013 the Saudi Quality Council in association with the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) organized a symposium for the awareness of measurements and their importance in all aspects of our daily life. In line with the theme of this year Measurements in Daily Life selected speakers from industry, metrology laboratories, government bodies and academic institutions were invited to deliver presentations on various topics around the main theme.

Sierra Leone

The World Metrology Day 2013 celebrated by the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau was a great success as many stake holders attended the occasion. The Key Note Address was delivered by the Minister of Trade and Industry Hon. Osman Boie Kamara who in his Statement said that "Reliable measurements are needed to meet the global challenges of clean air, safe water, sustainable energy, healthy food, advanced materials and dependable medicines". He also called on scientists and engineers to join the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau in achieving the above.

Singapore

To commemorate World Metrology Day 2013, the National Metrology Centre (NMC), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore is organising a conference on 20 May 2013 from 9am to 4pm at the NUS University Town, Ngee Ann Kongsi (NAK) Auditorium.

Distinguished speakers such as Dr Tom Dawson (Keynote speaker) from Procter & Gamble, Ms Kek Tze Ling from the National University Healthcare system, Ms Sim Lay Peng Deborah from the Health Sciences Authority, Mr Kolin Low from the Singapore Accreditation Council, and Dr Kai Fuu-Ming from the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology will share how measurement science can help improve the quality of life.

Attendees can also expect to gain insight and information from the exhibits by industry partners. This event will provide a useful platform for the measurement community to network and forge business partnerships.

Slovenia

The Metrology Institute of the Republic of Slovenia (MIRS) will organize and hold a conference to commemorate World Metrology Day on Wednesday, 22 May 2013 at 13:00 in the Elegans Conference Hall, Kokra Hotel, Brdo pri Kranju.

There will be interesting lectures dealing with various fields that relate to measurements in daily life.

The Honorary speaker will be the Minister of Economic Development and Technology, MSc. Stanko Stepišnik, who is responsible for metrology in Slovenia.

Sri Lanka

The Institute of Physics Sri Lanka (IPSL) organized a Guest Lecture on "Science of Measurements for daily life" by Mr. Rohan G. Perera, Director, Division of Metrology, Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) on 27th May 2013 at the Auditorium, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. Turkey

Dünya Metroloji Günü 20 Mayıs 2013 tarihinde Bilim, Sanayi ve Teknoloji Bakanlığı Metroloji ve Standardizasyon Genel Müdürlüğü ile birlikte TÜBİTAK UME’nin ev sahipliğinde çeşitli etkinliklerle kutlanacaktır.

Metroloji ve Standardizasyon Genel Müdürlüğü'nün organizasyonunda Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı ile birlikte 81 İl Milli Eğitim Müdürlükleri bünyesindeki liseler arasında düzenlenen “Günlük Hayatımızda Metroloji” konulu fotoğraf yarışması ile TÜBİTAK UME tarafından TÜBİTAK Gebze Yerleşkesi’nde gerçekleştirilen koşu ve masa tenisi turnuvası sportif etkinliklerinin ödülleri verilecektir.

Etkinlikler sırasında ayrıca ““Günlük Hayatımızda Metroloji” konulu fotoğraf yarışması sergisi ile TÜBİTAK UME tarafından oluşturulan Ölçüm Parkı gezilecektir. World Metrology Day will be celebrated in Turkey with a number of activities hosted jointly by TÜBİTAK UME and GDMS of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.

As part of the activities, scheduled between 09:00 and 16:00, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ince, a faculty member of Yeditepe University will give a talk on metrology and a project of Yeditepe University Communications Department students entitled “How Much Metrology?” consisting of footage of street interviews on the subject of measurements in daily life will be presented.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the photo competition on the subject of “Metrology in Daily Life”, organized by GDMS among high school students, and of the athletic and table tennis competitions organized by TÜBİTAK UME.

Those attending the celebrations will have the chance to view an exhibition of the submissions to the photo competition and tour a Measurement Park set up by TUBITAK UME. Invitations to attend the celebration were sent to various public institutions, universities and secondary schools. A total attendance of around 300 is expected.

United Kingdom

On the occasion of World Metrology Day 2013, UK organisations connected with metrology including NMO and the other organisations who form the National Measurement System will be actively engaged in promoting the day. Actions include:

  • NMO articles, brochures and case studies

This is the article that Peter Mason, CE of NMO and CIML President has written in support of WMD for the NMO site. Also an article will be appearing in TS Today (Trading Standards Today) entitled "Measurements in daily life" in the June issue of TS Today. NMO together with the other UK national measurement institutes LGC, NPL and NEL have published a brochure packed with measurement case studies called "Measurements in daily life".

  • Speeches

Peter Mason, CE of NMO and CIML President will be a keynote speaker at a Conference on Global Trends of Metrology on World Metrology Day 20 May and also at the National Seminar on Legal Metrology in Jakarta on 21 May. He will talk about this year's WMD theme and remind audiences of the role played by national measurement institutes, enforcement communities, BIPM and OIML in supporting confidence in trade and in creating world-wide uniformity of measurements and their traceability to the International System of Units (SI).

  • NPL

NPL have devoted a whole section of their website to World Metrology Day which includes several "Measurement is beautiful" images, NPL's role as a National Measurement Institute, key organisations in world metrology and key metrology facts about different countries.

  • NEL

  • Local Trading Standards Departments throughout the UK

They will be linking to information on WMD and using their social media channels to highlight the important work they carry out to ensure confidence in trade.


The EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology at the University of Huddersfield will be celebrating World Metrology Day with presentations, a quiz, posters and a celebratory cake.

Research students will also be taking part in a special workshop on White Light Spectral Interferometry for Embedded Metrology which will share some of the latest developments in metrology solutions for precision surface measurement.

On May 20, the Foundation Engineering Institute for Research and Technological Development (FIIIDT) is organizing the First Workshop on Metrology with motto: "Metrology in daily life". The National Autonomous Service for Standardization, Quality, Metrology and Technical Regulations (SENCAMER) will be present in the event.

Activities will start with metrological accuracy at 0900 h, Venezuelan time, with a maximum uncertainty of + / - 5 min (coverage probability 95 %). Anyone wishing to adjust their watch and provide traceability could visit the Industrial Metrology Laboratory, equipped with a rubidium clock.

Viet Nam

On the occasion of World Metrology Day 2013, the Vietnam Metrology Institute (VMI), in collaboration with the Vietnam Metrology Association (VINAMET) is organizing a World Metrology Day event entitled “Measurements in daily life”. The event will be held on May 17 at No.8 Hoang Quoc Viet Road, Cau Giay District, Ha Noi. This activity is held annually to celebrate World Metrology Day and promote measurement activities in Viet Nam.

This year, the program will cover the areas of health, food, the environment and commercial measurements related to the Metrology Law which has been promulgated.
